Entre 2018 y 2021 regreso reiteradamente a La Tirana, un pequeño poblado del desierto de Atacama que, pese a su mínima población estable, una vez al año se transforma en multitud durante la fiesta de la Virgen del Carmen.
Tomo el título Olimpiada en su sentido original —el período entre dos eventos— para desplazar la atención desde el clímax ritual hacia el intervalo en que el pueblo queda fuera de cuadro y cesa la circulación masiva/festiva. En el casco antiguo, ese entretiempo convierte el damero en un cuerpo en pausa, con calles polvorientas, casas cerradas y signos de ocupación intermitente.
Trabajo con imágenes de ese tiempo suspendido para proponerlo como verdadero escenario de la obra: el vacío intermedio donde se hacen visibles los costos que asumen quienes permanecen cuando las multitudes se retiran.
Between 2018 and 2021, I return repeatedly to La Tirana, a small town in the Atacama Desert which, despite its minimal permanent population, turns into a multitude once a year during the Fiesta of the Virgen del Carmen.
I adopt the title Olympiad in its original sense—the period between two events—in order to shift attention away from the ritual climax toward the interval in which the town slips out of frame and the massive/festive circulation of bodies and goods comes to a halt. In the old quarter, this in-between time turns the grid of streets into a body at rest, with dusty roads, shuttered houses and signs of intermittent occupation.
I work with images from this suspended time to propose it as the true stage of the work: the intermediate void where the costs borne by those who remain become visible once the crowds have withdrawn.
